USGBC Extends LEED v4 and v4.1 Registration Deadline to 2027
On May 28, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) officially announced an extension of the registration deadline for LEED v4 and v4.1 green building certification to June 30, 2027.
Following the official release of LEED v5 in early 2026, USGBC had previously set June 30, 2026 as the final registration date for projects pursuing certification under LEED v4 and v4.1. However, shortly before this deadline, USGBC announced a one-year extension for the registration of commercial projects under the previous rating systems. Accordingly, the final registration deadline for LEED v4 and v4.1 has been moved to June 30, 2027.
This decision was made in response to direct feedback from the global project community. Current market disruptions, including supply chain challenges, financial constraints and changes in regulatory requirements, have affected the schedules of many projects. The one-year extension provides additional flexibility, allowing project teams to move forward with their investment plans with greater confidence.
Although the registration period for LEED v4 and v4.1 has been extended, USGBC continues to emphasize that LEED v5 is the recommended pathway for new projects. As the latest version of the rating system, LEED v5 is designed to strongly advance decarbonization, enhance climate resilience and optimize long-term operational performance.
LEED v5 Officially Released
Earlier in 2026, USGBC officially released LEED v5 with a number of important updates. LEED v5 places a stronger focus on carbon emission reduction, improving building resilience under changing climate conditions, and further enhancing building operational performance.
For existing projects, project owners and consultants may flexibly choose LEED v4, LEED v4.1 or LEED v5 for project registration.
