LCA Consulting

LCA is a standardized method under ISO 14040/14044 that helps measure carbon footprints and continuously improve the environmental impact of carbon emissions.
Overview of the LCA Method

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a technique used to analyze and evaluate the comprehensive environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product’s or service’s life—from the extraction of raw materials, through production and use, to recycling or disposal (i.e., from cradle to grave).

LCA is standardized under ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, providing a reliable framework to quantify carbon footprints and continuously improve environmental performance by identifying and evaluating all energy and material inputs and outputs throughout the product life cycle: raw material → manufacturing → distribution → usage → disposal.

Benefits of the LCA Method

Through LCA, we can gain a full understanding of a product’s life cycle. This enables us to identify ways to reduce environmental impact by minimizing energy and resource use during production, transportation, distribution, and consumption—thus contributing to both natural environmental protection and better living conditions.

LCA also supports:

  • Technology and equipment upgrades

  • Improved processes for storage and usage

  • Reduced energy and material costs

  • Design and development of more eco-friendly products

Four Key Steps in Conducting an LCA

Currently, the standard LCA evaluation process involves four critical steps:

Step 1: Define the Goal and Scope
Clearly define the objectives and scope of the LCA before conducting the assessment.

Step 2: Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)
List all environmental inputs and outputs within the defined scope.

Step 3: Impact Assessment
Provide additional environmental insights to support the interpretation of inventory results, helping assess their significance on the environment.

Step 4: Improvement and Recommendations
Use the findings to draw conclusions, make recommendations, and propose strategies for reducing environmental impacts.

LCA – A Valuable Tool for Environmental Profiling and Product Strategy

Today, LCA is considered a valuable tool for building environmental profiles for products and identifying environmental hotspots within product supply chains. Manufacturers and service providers can also combine LCA with environmental labeling schemes—such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)—to enhance their product marketing strategies.
